This is a very hot topic right now and one that we, at Hatters, feel very passionate about. If you are a coffee lover, you may have heard recently about the 'latte levy' - the BBC have reported that MP's are looking to put a 25p tax on to disposable cup usage, and even a complete ban of throwaway cups if they are not being recycled properly by 2023.
Starbucks has promised to trial a 5p cup charge in 20 to 25 central London outlets in response to the MP's concern. Starbucks already offers a 25p discount to customers who bring in their own reusable cups.
According to the latest figures, the UK throws away 2.5 billion disposable coffee cups every year, at least half a million every day are littering our country. It is now time that producers and distributors of disposable cups take action to rectify this outrageous matter and produce something which is fully recyclable.
